Honestly, you’ll need to clarify where you’re getting these numbers from, because several of your claims don’t match what’s in the published literature.

“As effective as finasteride” / “66% DHT reduction” → I can’t find any human study showing Ecklonia cava reduces scalp or serum DHT anywhere near that much. The 5-alpha-reductase inhibition figures usually come from in vitro tests (rat enzyme), which don’t necessarily translate to real-world results in humans.

“14% better than minoxidil” → The few studies out there compare Ecklonia and minoxidil in ex vivo or animal models. I haven’t seen any human data where Ecklonia outperforms minoxidil. If you have a link, I’d like to read it.

“Finasteride lowers testosterone” → In reality, most studies show finasteride slightly increases serum testosterone ( approximately +10%), not lowers it.

Same for the Ecklonia testosterone increase.

Effect of Dieckol, a Component of Ecklonia cava, on the Promotion of Hair Growth

Figure 5A

Sorry, it was a 65.1% reduction with Ecklonia cava as a whole. Dieckol itself was as effective as finasteride.

Figure 5C

You are correct in saying it is not an in vivo human study, though. It was a study using C57BL/6 mice and NIH3T3 fibroblasts. However, studies using human hair follicles show similar benefits.

Enhancement of Human Hair Growth Using Ecklonia cava Polyphenols

The first study was comparing to finasteride. The second one was comparing to minoxidil. That's the positive control in the figures.

Figure 1

That's where the comparison to minoxidil is coming from. Again, you are correct in saying it is not an in vivo human study, but they did use human hair follicle cells in this one. Most of the in vivo human studies on Ecklonia cava have been on blood and cardiovascular parameters. We absolutely need more comprehensive human studies on Ecklonia cava and hair growth.

Effects of 12-week Oral Supplementation of Ecklonia cava Polyphenols on Anthropometric and Blood Lipid Parameters in Overweight Korean Individuals: A Double-blind Randomized Clinical Trial

Effect of seaweed \(Ecklonia cava extract\) on blood glucose and insulin level on prediabetic patients: A double-blind randomized controlled trial

Efficacy and safety of a dieckol-rich extract \(AG-dieckol\) of brown algae, Ecklonia cava, in pre-diabetic individuals: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial

Supplementation of a polyphenol extract from Ecklonia cava reduces body fat, oxidative and inflammatory stress in overweight healthy subjects with abdominal obesity: A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial

Effects of Ecklonia cava Polyphenol in Individuals with Hypercholesterolemia: A Pilot Study

Effect of Supplementation With Ecklonia cava Polyphenol on Endurance Performance of College Students

So for sure we need more double blind placebo controlled studied on Ecklonia cava for hair loss in humans. As for the finasteride lowering testosterone, I spoke about it above. I was looking at a study that was using higher doses for BPH. It might not be relevant to lower doses for hair loss.

Finasteride, not tamsulosin, increases severity of erectile dysfunction and decreases testosterone levels in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia
