may or may not be the place for this, but the dose recommendation for mag glycinate powdered form is 1200 mg twice daily with a 14% elemental magnesium content. This seems like a lot, does this seem like too large of a dose?

Hey if you're the founder of Nootropics Depot I have a question. I've read a lot about you guys and I think it's fantastic that you test your products for purity and contamination. However I'm just a very skeptical consumer and I recognize the economic incentives to relax such regulations once one successful test has been done that can be pointed to for years.
I'm wondering if there are any resources testing various companies' products that corroborated your findings. Like a lab buying 20 of the same product off\-the\-shelf from different vendors and testing them without collaborating with the vendors.

The entire reason I got into this was to advance the testing and quality control standards of the industry. There is certainly economic incentives to laxen your regulations, if you are shortsighted. Testing is very expensive, and running your own lab is even more so. However, the reason people trust us is because they know how crazy I am about quality control, and about advancing the standards of the entire supplement industry. We not only test every single batch that comes into our facility, but we test every container of every batch. Literally nobody else does this, because you need your own lab to even begin to do it. For example: let's say we get 1,000kg of something in. The manufacturer would send us 40 barrels if it is a dense powder. To start, GMP guidelines state that you only need to do skip lot testing. So after you test a couple batches from a supplier, you can start only testing every 4th batch or so. So most places don't even test every single batch that they get in. That's industry standard, and how pretty much everyone does it; and is something I think needs changing. Well not only are we testing every single batch, but we take a sample from every single one of the 40 barrels. If there is variability in any of the barrels, we will reject those barrels. Often times suppliers sneak in barrels from different batches, but label them all as the same manufacturer batch number. It happens literally every month. We catch those, since we are testing everything to such a crazy degree. 99% of the others out there aren't. That's insane to me! The industry standard is woefully inadequate, in my opinion.
Then there's the actual testing methods people are using. It's insane to me how inadequate those are! Nobody is doing species/plant part testing on their natural extracts. Most are doing UV-VIS, and MAYBE HPLC for content. However, most are using UV-VIS for content as well. They are not doing HP-TLC to ensure the correct species and plant part are being used in the extract. Again, skip lot testing is the standard. So most places are only testing every few batches, and with inaccurate and outdated methodologies. Very few places are doing heavy metals testing of every single batch as well. We've worked very hard, and with a half a dozen other 3rd part labs, to ensure we are using the most up-to-date scientific methods for testing whatever plant extract we are selling. We hold things to VERY high standards, and are not afraid to reject anything that seems off.
Then you also have the manufacturing QA/QC, which is also woefully inadequate. Hell, the USP guidelines for approving the consistency of capsule weights is so poorly written, I am actually blown away that's the industry standard... We write our own QA/QC procedures, and hold everyone we work with accountable for those standards. On top of that, having an in-house lab allows us to do things other places can't. Every single lot is double-checked by our lab before going on the shelf. So once a lot is made, it goes to a holding area where our lab takes a random sample from the lot, and runs it through the lab once again. That ensures that nobody mixed anything up in the production process. Sometimes powders and extracts can look very similar to each other. If you don't scan it in the lab, you may not recognize that someone mixed the containers of raw material up. Our processes prevent that. Not to mention all the checks and sign-offs we have along each step of the way. Also, I structured my quality control department as a totally different division than production. So they hold things to the standards I set, and won't cut corners just to get things out by certain deadlines. If your quality control is managed by the same director as the production, they might approve a workaround to meet a deadline. Having them be separate divisions with separate management that answers directly to me, prevents any of that from being a problem.
So that was a long answer, but hopefully that helps you to understand how much I care about quality control. It's the entire reason we are here. If the industry standard was adequate, and vendors had always been doing what was needed, I never would have had to start this company in the first place. I also don't trust the companies out that are "objectively" verifying vendor's quality. Most are just veiled affiliate sites pushing the vendors that pay them. Anybody that knows me, knows that I am the most serious person out there about quality. My team doesn't fear a 3rd part company coming and testing a random product of ours, because they fear me first. I know if it is on our shelves, it has been tested to such a degree that I would have no problem with anyone coming in and sending whatever they wanted off to a lab for analysis. I'd probably be able to tell that lab exactly the testing methods they would need to verify whatever it is they are looking at. Hopefully that gives you a small insight into how seriously we treat quality.
