It is amazing because, at least in my classes, this was all explained quite well in public school!
To make a convincing argument, one first starts off by agreeing with the other party. Then, you slowly work towards your own position, doing one's best to demonstrate along the way that there is indeed no conflict.
Apparently a lot of people were asleep that day. :( Online discourse would be a lot more civil if people had paid attention to their school teachers!

Then you went to a good school, or were lucky and got a good teacher. That is the exception to the rule. I've seen some really good teachers. However, they are few and far between in the public school system in the US. I live in Arizona, and it's especially bad here. I went to private schools up until sophomore year of high school, and even I had trouble getting good teachers.
Life would be so much more pleasant if everyone went about their discussions in this manner!
