Well, working in the healthcare industry I've heard of hospital stays costing in the millions... but they involved extensive surgeries, new or experimental treatments. $17 million sounds ridiculous to me, but since it's the internet and no one can lie on the internet, I try to come up with a quasi-plausible answer.
Hospital + rehab + home care? I dunno.

$17 Million over three weeks is $5.6 Million per week. That's $800,000 per day, every day. It's impossible!
I think costs are out of control too, but sensationalizing it just discredits the argument. My little sister's surgery costing almost $1 million was enough to make me choke when I heard it. Making up stories like I have seen, spreads misinformation and confuses people. So much so that when I am on business overseas, I get asked ridiculous questions about our healthcare! It's bad enough if we stick to the facts.
