$3k is the average nightly going rate for a hospital stay and that's on a normal med/surge floor. And that's before tests and whatnot. Other units/floors cost more based on the type of care you receive.
I believe that the newer acute stroke treatments are extremely costly, but I cannot find anything on how much that is for the consumer. There were a few studies done on hospital costs, but they weren't US based and they didn't seem to cover treatment so much as staff and resources.
For aheadinabox's grandfather to incur such a high charge I'd wager he had brain surgery, was in a top of the line hospital, etc.

My little sister had brain surgery for a tumor a couple years ago from the best surgeon in Denver. She also had bacterial meningitis caused from the tumor eating away her skull, allowing bacteria to get into her brain stem. She was in and out of the hospital for over a year. Her total bills came out to a little over $750,000. I have never heard anywhere even close to $17 million before!
