Imagine all the impurities in products back then, or even completely fake ones! The analytical equipment used to verify these things didn't even exist in those days, much less get used in any frequency. Poppy seeds accumulate cadmium. You think the people selling bottles of heroin to kids with a cold back in 1895 were testing for cadmium in each batch? LOL
