" Obama took a not-too-subtle swipe at his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, declaring: “I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth.” There remains a role for government to give everybody a “fair shot,” Obama said — not just the wealthy."

Or do both? Why do you Americans always have to pick a side, why not try to reduce spending and increase taxes...?

Sure, if that is indeed what we need. However, 48% of our population pays $0 federal taxes, and 1/3 receives more money from the government than they put in. For a society to work properly, every member of the society has to have a stake in the system; even if it is a small one. The rich carry our country. The top 10% pay 71% of our taxes, the top 1% pay 38% of all taxes. We have the most progressive tax system in the world already! My problem is, the US yearly deficit is larger than China's yearly TOTAL budget! We have a spending problem! Wars, inefficiently run programs, countless government agencies that are unnecessary, added to the fact that we are expanding our money supply to stave off any perceived decrease in living standard, is destroying our middle class and digging us into debt like we've never seen! I'm not picking a side. I was an economics major at university, and understand the markets. I also travel the world studying the various country's economies. We live in a global market now, with very shaky foundations. All I am saying is that there are much bigger issues than the incorrect notion that the rich in the US are not paying their fair share. We are being bled dry by the expansion of our money supply, and the middle class is taking the brunt of it!
