" Obama took a not-too-subtle swipe at his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, declaring: “I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth.” There remains a role for government to give everybody a “fair shot,” Obama said — not just the wealthy."

What they were answering

I actually wish we were all under one government, one religion (preferably no religion for me, but alas), etc. I do want to take care of all humans. Why can't we do that?

And as for making an efficient Republic, what defines a national issue at that point? If you go by what Republicans say, nothing is a national issue, if you go by the democrats, everything is a national issue. Who is more right? That right there is why an "efficient" Republic will never exist. It can't be efficient by virtue of different opinions, although I suppose the same could be said for any form of government that isn't just a dictatorship, but I digress.

Point being is, we can't define national issues vs. state issues, and there-in lies your problem. Personally, I would have no problem with your desired system as long as we agree that human/constitutional rights were a guaranteed, national-only affair. That way all those ass-backward states that are against a woman's choice, open media (especially the internet), etc. can fuck off, and you still got your more monetarily efficient entity.

Thing is, that doesn't happen, the states decide they have the right to fuck with those affairs, hence why you need a federal government to be strong enough to tell them to stop being stupid because the majority of the country thinks those states are denying a human right.

I guess at the end of the…

I agree with you in concept, but in practice it does not seem to work. I too wish we could all just be human and work together, putting our differences aside. However, absolute power corrupts absolutely. My reason for wanting a republic is to limit that. It's much easier for me to affect my local city government than the federal. It is also easier for me to stay completely informed about each little local/state issue. Human rights needs to be universal, not just national. I too want to take care of all humans. I just know the only sustainable way to do that is education. That is the only way we can completely weed out intolerance and ignorance. We cannot legislate these drastic changes! What did you do the last time someone said you HAD to do something? You probably immediately stopped wanting to do it. That is human nature. However, if we leveraged education, we could instigate the shift toward people wanting and choosing to do the right thing. My ultimate goal is the same as many. I just think that forcing change will not work. The biggest problem I have right now is that with all the discussions going on about taxes, elections, civil rights, etc is that education does not even get mentioned! That is going to be the key to saving humanity! That is going to determine whether or not we are truly fucked!

The Chicago City Council just voted 43-2 to decriminalize possession of marijuana.

Replying to slybrows · He should have said that it's already de-criminalized if you're white *in Chicago*. The cops here are pretty. fucking. racist.

All the Chicago cops are pretty? Damn!

While I agree medical costs are out of control, I have a hard time believing that your grandfather's 3 weeks stay cost $17 million!

Is it true? Did the baby-boomers take advantage of the social programs their parents created and cemented, then voted to dismantle those same benefits for their children in the name of freedom, individual responsibility, and more benefits for themselves? Can a generation be that selfish?

This is what I was thinking. Perhaps the cycles will shift or change entirely, given our new ability to transfer knowledge faster. Why do the cycles always have to be the same, or happen at all, regardless of innovation
