" Obama took a not-too-subtle swipe at his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, declaring: “I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth.” There remains a role for government to give everybody a “fair shot,” Obama said — not just the wealthy."

If the federal government doesn't run it, who is going to force the states to adopt another system when they find one that works? What if one state says fuck you and likes their theocratic education? Who enforces this? If you give the federal government the ability to do so, then you start getting towards what the government already is now, a battle between what is a national issue and what is a state issue.
Like I said, I think huge over-arching issues like human and constitutional rights, healthcare, etc. laws should be made at the federal level so everyone gets them. They don't necessarily need to lay out every detail, but should, with healthcare for example, enforce that all plans at least have a single-payer option, guaranteed coverage despite certain pre-conditions, etc.

I think that you just have a lot more confidence in your government that I do! I really wish we could do that and it would work efficiently! However, the US political system is fucked!!! I don't have any confidence in it anymore. If I could redo everything from scratch, I would definitely have a system that treats things like healthcare and human rights at a national level. I just am too afraid of what would happen if our current government got that power! I have two choices being forced down my throat right now. One thinks the government should run everything and tell everyone what to do. The other thinks the government should run nothing, but still tell you what morally to do! It's fucked! I cant be fiscally conservative without being grouped in with the social conservative nutbags. And the social conservatives call me a crazy liberal for my views on personal rights and drugs. It's a lose lose for me at the moment!
