" Obama took a not-too-subtle swipe at his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, declaring: “I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth.” There remains a role for government to give everybody a “fair shot,” Obama said — not just the wealthy."

If you start getting rid of Federal taxes and support systems, your dollar value will start fluctuating widely between states and your federal government will basically turn into a large, ineffectual exchange.

If Americans want to be the United States of America, then you need to have a strong federal government that provides healthcare, technological grants for research, etc. If not, why don't you guys just split all your states off into separate countries and let them handle everything themselves? Might as well at that point.

If all of the rich members of the USA populace are paying less taxes overall, then it requires a universal (federal) solution where they all pay more. It basically becomes an argument of, do you actually want to take care of your fellow Americans? Or just your fellow State citizens?

Is that not what the EU is? Central currency, yet the individual member states/countries have their own governments etc. The difference is, we were designed as a republic, so our laws make it easier for interstate commerce and policies. By your logic, why don't we just have a one world government? Do you want to take care of your fellow humans, or just your fellow countrymen? Macro-management fails, time and time again. Why can we not make a more efficient republic that manages local issues locally, and manages national issues nationally?

I think he might be lying. Nobody puts cookies in their pants pocket.

I was driving down the freeway on Thanksgiving one year, going the speed limit. There was a cop about half a mile in front of me. Suddenly he slammed on his brakes. I changed lanes and passed him, then he pulled me over.

The Chicago City Council just voted 43-2 to decriminalize possession of marijuana.

Replying to slybrows · He should have said that it's already de-criminalized if you're white *in Chicago*. The cops here are pretty. fucking. racist.

All the Chicago cops are pretty? Damn!

Earth’s richest 1,000 individuals now control as much wealth as the poorest 2.5 billion people on the planet. This super elite uses its vast wealth to control the media, influence politicians, and bend laws to their favor.

Replying to [deleted] · No many of them live in this country. This country is a seething shithole of an exponentially growing extreme poverty class. 46.37 million Americans live below the poverty line a

While I agree, the poverty line here in the US is slightly higher than many countries. I've seen things in Egypt, Mexico, India, Africa etc. that are on a whole other scale.

Aurora shooting victim could face $2 million in medical bills because of lack of health insurance

Replying to [deleted] · This. Hell, my grandfather was in the hospital after a stroke for three weeks before passing and his total bill for everything was ~$17,000,000. Yep, that's not exorbitant at all

While I agree medical costs are out of control, I have a hard time believing that your grandfather's 3 weeks stay cost $17 million!

Is it true? Did the baby-boomers take advantage of the social programs their parents created and cemented, then voted to dismantle those same benefits for their children in the name of freedom, individual responsibility, and more benefits for themselves? Can a generation be that selfish?

Replying to torpidnotion · The generational theory doesn't take into consideration the proliferation of technology. It's especially true that in the past 20 years, technology has shortened this cycle. Ther

This is what I was thinking. Perhaps the cycles will shift or change entirely, given our new ability to transfer knowledge faster. Why do the cycles always have to be the same, or happen at all, regardless of innovation
