Well, prior the invention written records the only technique to keep track of the entire knowledge of your tribe/culture/... was the oral tradition. The argument that the constant exercise of this technique was enough stimulus to reach an equivalent number of the average neural connections in a "modern brain", could be made. I guess. I don't know. Maybe?

Perhaps in the language center, due to their development of language from scratch. However, they were never exposed to differential calculus, the variety and extent of modern music and art, genetics, multiple languages, world travel, etc. The structures of their brains would be drastically different than our own. Also, as someone else mentioned, their diet and nutritional intake would be far worse than ours. If we raised a baby from that time period in modern times, with our diet and education, I feel they would be capable of pretty much the same as we are.
