I hope eventually you realize that cautionary logic, and trust for those around you, are not mutually exclusive. People are stupid, emotional, under-informed, over-reactionary, and generally ignorant. However, they are all on the same journey you are, and come from different places. Writing people off is not going to do you, or society, any good. One needs to look at why someone does what they do. Only then can you understand their perspective, and perhaps change it.

I am not saying trust everyone without regard for yourself. I am saying that you can selectively trust those that are worthy of it, without opening yourself up to any more risk of being taken advantage of. I don't want to live in a world where good people are afraid to be who they really are, and I don't think you do either. There are good people out there. Many of them are masked by the same perspective you have right now. Unless someone comes along and breaks that cycle, it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Allow yourself to open up more freely, but always be on guard for logical cues that will tell you when to protect yourself. Deep down people are not selfish. They just feel they have to be in today's world. We need to show them that is not how it has to be.
