You're talking about an issue that is bigger than both sides. People on the right want less taxes but don't ever want to talk about less wars. People on the left want to talk about less wars (unless, apparently, the President is theirs), and will talk about less taxes. Indeed, we're all like you, we're willing to pay taxes, just tell us what we're getting.
And yet we don't go to School board meetings. We don't vote at city council meetings. And the vast majority of our tax liability gets paid through property taxes.
I'm not saying you don't go to these things, I'm saying the people who want accountability don't hold politicians accountable. We know more about Obama is doing – we know that at a recent campaign stop he said something about roads and business owners. We know Mrs Romney said something or other. Who is on your local city council?
If we want transparency, our voting percentage seems to differ. Unless and until we demand it at the very bottom, the people on the top will assume we don't care. And they're right. So they manufacture things for us to be outraged at.

I absolutely agree! Most people I speak to have no idea who is running in state a local elections, much less for the Senate and House. They don't bother to read up on propositions, but take the word of the misleading commercials and signs they see. And they certainly don't hold those in power accountable for their actions. So you are right, until the population as a whole starts becoming more informed and caring about the state and local elections, our system will continue on this path.
