I think there's plenty of cases where people's bodies/neurochemistry probably have a hidden predisposition or some genetic makeup that means they can be a hyper responder to usually anodyne compounds. Their system freaks out, goes into overdrive and can't recover easily. Considering the subconscious is so complex, so unfathomable and yet drives us, and we know human biochemistry is so intricate and we don't understand much of it, I don't think it's impossible that people can have reactions like that. The compound itself obviously isn't doing everything but neither can you say it's not a trigger. To undermine experiences like this doesn't help us come closer to understanding biodiversity

A single dose of lion's mane that makes you totally impotent for years?!? There's no way that is possible. Hidden predispositions where people set off a psychosomatic response? Sure. However, that's not a mechanism of lion's mane causing immediate long-lasting effects. Anything could set it off. Someone could tell you that L-theanine does it, and it could set off that psychosomatic reaction. That wouldn't mean L-theanine is causing impotence.
