Should I expect to "feel" something from a Nootropic?

I understand that in some cases the answer is yes. However, when I was introduced to Nootropics, like the racetams, I was told that its not going to be like getting a buzz...this was what drew me because I was not looking for a legal high or something childish like that. I was told that I would do research, starting with natural supps as a baseline, and then add racetams for a period of time at a regular dose and schedule. The effects would be subtle, defines over the course of a month or so, and would include increased cognition that may result in subtle mood change, perspective etc. I feel like Nootropics are more and more marketed for their immediate effects-Aniracetam for anxiety, Oxiracetam for stimulant and so on... Am I missing something?

For healthy people, most racetams are going to be subtle. However, a lot of people out there have anxiety, depression, lethargy, brain fog, etc. For those people, racetams can be very noticeable. Also, the newer racetam derivatives can be a lot more noticeable than the traditional ones.

You also have to realize that the term nootropic has morphed over the years. Now it seems that any substance that enhances some aspect of cognition is being called a nootropic. I pushed back on that for a while. However, I've come to terms with the fact that words evolve, and constantly getting into arguments about what is and is not a nootropic gets draining. So for some people, they can get nootropic effects from things that are not traditionally nootropics. That is why we allow talk of things like Tianeptine and NSI-189. They are not nootropics in the strict sense of the word. However, some people's cognition is enhanced, because it alleviates a deficit they have. So we can't really talk about "nootropics" as single class of substances anymore. It's more about having nootropic effects in certain people.
