Empathogens

While not nootropics per se, empathogens can help us get access to a kind of information that we can use for making better decisions, I believe.
Commonly, MDMA and several popular hallucinogenic compounds increase empathy in humans - but with potentially unwanted effects.
Are we aware of any substances with a reduced risk of hallucinating, legal risks, and less toxicity? The recent comments on NSI-189 and hyper-emotionality make me wonder about empathy.

for me, yes. I like it. I smile even more which goes with increased happiness. Things are even funnier. I tear up easier. It isn't like having mood swings though, all the emotions are logical.. just I feel them more intensely. Yet at the same time, I find that I can continue to think normally without the emotions grinding everything to a halt or making me irrational. I can be sad about something without thinking negatively or such and instead accepting and embracing the emotion as a part of life. I'm normally a happy person, but this effect is probably the most obvious for me. I guess it is like it stops the stress that emotions cause? That applies to my mild anxiety too which is great(doesn't make the anxiety stronger though, phew). I also meditate 30mins a day and bike a decent amount which probably is helping, but I only noticed this really when I added the NSI.
edit: for the OP, I have a ton of empathy regardless, so it is hard to say NSI adds to that. But.. given the fact that I will tear up easier over, say, a person's death which doesn't directly effect my life.. I might be inclined to say there is some enhancement of empathy going on there. and... thought I should add a disclaimer that it seems I respond quite well to NSI in general compared to a lot of people, so this isn't exactly typical.

That's interesting. Mine was more like PMS. It made me way too emotional for practical use. I actually cried a couple nights, which is very unlike me. Surprisingly, I did not notice any of the good empathy effects. It was more an overwhelming sense of emotionality.
