Empathogens

While not nootropics per se, empathogens can help us get access to a kind of information that we can use for making better decisions, I believe.
Commonly, MDMA and several popular hallucinogenic compounds increase empathy in humans - but with potentially unwanted effects.
Are we aware of any substances with a reduced risk of hallucinating, legal risks, and less toxicity? The recent comments on NSI-189 and hyper-emotionality make me wonder about empathy.

How emotional are you as a person, baseline? I am fairly emotionless and half interested in trying it specifically for this purpose, but also afraid the cell growth might lead to carcinogenesis.

That is a difficult question. I am very emotional internally. I do not show that emotion externally, though. NSI-189 amplified those internal emotions, and made it impossible to mask them externally. That's good in some cases, but bad in a lot of others.
I highly doubt there is any risk of carcinogenesis.
