Resistance/Tolerance - Caffeine and others.

Now I only have caffeine on Sunday and it has a huge effect on me (double espresso, I'm wired for hours, get a ton done and amazing work outs at the gym) but when I used to drink coffee every day it had no effect on me. I took three or four months off and then when I had my espresso I had the effects which were great.
So we know that caffeine builds up a tolerance pretty fast, not sure how long the tolerance last after you stop consuming it, as you can tell I'm planning one cup a week and hopefully no tolerance.
What other substances out there cause a tolerance to build up?

Generally, any substance that agonizes/antagonizes receptors directly, or leads to increases/decreases in extracellular neurotransmitters, are going to have a tolerance buildup. Substances that allosterically modulate receptors, and those that up-regulate receptors like bacopa, usually don't lead to tolerance, or can even lead to reverse tolerance. Most substances that do not lead to a tolerance, and increase the body's natural efficiency, are called adaptogens. Try looking into that class of substance.
