Is purchasing Adderall or methylphenidate from an online pharmacy a bad idea?

Original post in this thread

I see some online pharmacies that sell Adderall. Is it a bad idea to purchase it? How about generic methylphenidate?

I don't see how it can be legal, but I've seen online sites and pharmacies sell it.

I used to be prescribed it in school around 10 years ago and I'm considering going back on it. But before shelling out for a doctor's appointment, I want to take it for a week or so to see if it's still something that helps my productivity.

thanks!

It's not an attempt to dumb things down. In the research nootropic usually doesn't have a connection to the parameters listed in giurgea's definition. I think language clearly evolves to find meanings for words that aren't their original definition. I think this happened because the definition carries a bunch of unknowable postulations with it which creates confusion. I don't want to send people out looking things up and thinking something being called a nootropic in a paper is anything but a sign it has cognitive potential. Drugs need to be evaluated individually over time, which is why I think the original definition didn't stick.

Yeah, I see both sides of the argument. I know we are on different sides of the table with it, but I do think at least understanding the origin of the word is useful. It's such a grey area in a lot of cases, which makes a hard line definition difficult. However, completely throwing out the definition that he created for this purpose seems a little extreme to me. Blurred lines are one thing. Completely throwing out the definition made by the man who created the word is another.

I actually had a discussion with Jason about this after making this comment. He is on your side of the argument. He thinks the distinction is just a distraction at this point, because everything has some level of side effects. The dosage makes the poison, after all. I suppose I do agree somewhat.

So trying to stick to a hard line definition may not be the best idea. But I also do not think deleting every mention of the original definition of the word is good either. People need to understand the original idea behind nootropics, then fully understand why the nuances of the specifics substances make that definition hard to reach.
