Is purchasing Adderall or methylphenidate from an online pharmacy a bad idea?

I see some online pharmacies that sell Adderall. Is it a bad idea to purchase it? How about generic methylphenidate?
I don't see how it can be legal, but I've seen online sites and pharmacies sell it.
I used to be prescribed it in school around 10 years ago and I'm considering going back on it. But before shelling out for a doctor's appointment, I want to take it for a week or so to see if it's still something that helps my productivity.
thanks!

Where do you find this definition? Even the dictionary makes no mention of tolerance buildup or toxicity. Link 1, Link 2, Link 3, Link 4
I feel like this sub has created its own definition.
EDIT:
Also,
>The Beginners Guide to Nootropics is not meant to tell you what is and what is not a nootropic.
Why not? Shouldn't that be priority number one?

The word "nootropic" was coined by the creator of the first nootropic, Dr. Corneliu E. Giurgea. Those were the properties that a substance must have to be called a nootropic. People have since tried to bastardize that definition for some reason. They even keep deleting the section on Wikipedia talking about what a nootropic must have to be called that. This sub certainly did not get the Romanian doctor in 1972 to alter his definition of the word he created. That's just silly.
Trying to merge the terms cognitive enhancer and nootropic into one word does nobody any good, except for marketing people. The word nootropic was thought up specifically to delineate the differences between cognitive enhancers with side effects and damage, to those with none. Merging the terms is a silly and petty attempt to dumb down things for people.
Shouldn't that be priority number one?
Well the beginners guide states the side effects and risks of the various substances. Some people do not think the term matters much anymore. I am not one of those people.
