If tianeptine is so great, why didn't the company who originally manufactured the drug patent it? They're focusing on newer drugs in its class and not focusing as much on tianeptine.

The patent expired before US FDA trials could be run. So no company is going to spend millions on getting it approved, since they will not be able to exclusively sell it to recuperate the costs. It's a major flaw in our system.
