Why are racetams not available locally?

I've been taking Aniracetam for a few months now and am fairly happy with its effects.
I'm in the US and living in a large city but there is no obvious local vendor of the stuff (or other racetams in general). Why is this? Any other supplement I need I can get down the street. My wife suggests that I'm putting myself at some risk by taking pills purchased on eBay, and I don't disagree with her logic. I understand that racetams are drugs rather than 'supplements' but that still doesn't really answer the question.

I'm in Chicago, and there's a health food store nearby that has pram, ani, oxi, and piracetam for sale.

No way! That's nuts! That's just asking for an FDA fine and shutdown. They may give us some leeway when selling online. However, the FDA takes physical store sales much more seriously, as it's more likely to attract under-informed customers.
