:-p Your career is always affected if you don't suck up to your manager. As an engineer, that usually just involved working the odd weekend and laughing at some bad jokes.
If I was higher up the chain of command, I suspect it would become more important. Likewise, if I showed up to the office with a Greenpeace t-shirt and a "abolish oil subsidies" bumper sticker on my car, it certainly wouldn't do me any favors.

True. It just seems like it could be considered discrimination if a person is punished, or not given opportunities, if his or her political ideals do not match that of their boss! Take my industry for example, telecommunications. If I were to be denied a promotion because my boss found out I supported a certain candidate that was not his choice, that would be insane! I could see if I was openly advocating for the abolishment of phone systems or something to that nature. However, normal policy differences are inevitable, and hardly grounds for determining one's ability in their position.
