It just seems like it could be considered discrimination if a person is punished, or not given opportunities, if his or her political ideals do not match that of their boss!
There is no such thing as a political protected class. Your boss can shit-can you for affiliating with the wrong party. More likely, s/he'll just shit-can you for "doing a bad job" and let you argue otherwise.
If I were to be denied a promotion because my boss found out I supported a certain candidate that was not his choice, that would be insane!
It wouldn't be illegal. And if the company - for whatever reason - believed it had a vested interest in denying you a promotion because of your political beliefs, it would make perfect sense for them not to prompt you. Beyond that, there's always something of a country club at the top of a big firm. People don't want to share power with those they disagree with. You can pretty much guarantee everyone in our respective board rooms drinks at the same bars and golfs at the same courses and whatnot. It's clichish, sure. But that's life.

Yeah, I suppose there would be nothing illegal about it. I personally would not want to work for a company that did that though. I guess then it's my right to go work somewhere else. I'd say that we could just stop supporting companies that participated in this, but it's kind of hard to boycott Exxon!
