Different species can actually vary a lot. For example, Rhodiola rosea contains rosavins. Rhodiola crenulata does not. So one of the main actives in Rhodiola rosea, which were named after the plant, don't occur in the very close species crenulata. Sometimes there can be big differences between two seemingly closely related plants in the same genus. I'd have to dig more into the research on Epimedium specifically to say for sure, and we would have to do a little more lab work to ID some of the other flavonoid peaks in the samples, but it would be doable if there are reference standards. For our 50%, it was mostly icariin in there. I will have to pull up the chromatogram tomorrow to see, but there were not a ton of other flavonoids in there like the 10%. It's mostly going to be icariin. The cost to eliminate all the plant material and get to a 98% usually doesn't justify it. It can be done, but the cost per mg will go up substantially.
Reading through those studies, those are some insane doses they are using. 7.5 GRAMS per kg up to 30 grams per kg in rats. That's pretty insane. The rat one is also pre-print and not peer reviewed yet. The zebrafish one claims it is a legit model for humans, but I will have to do some more research on that to have an informed opinion.
