u/MisterYouAreSoDumb Thank you very much. I hope you can help suggest something my 14 year old.

In brief: My son, when he was 11 years, he got Meningitis out of blue, was in coma for 17 days and in intensive care for 2 months + re-hab for 18 months, he is back to 'normal' and in school (high-school), \but\ I feel that his processing is slow and long term memory is questionable; and is bit on 'shy' side + lacks verbal fluency.

Question: Can I use Lions Mane and Reishi for my 14 year old son...if so, what's the dosage. My intent is simple - to give him a normal teenage with optimal chances of success in life.Would appreciate any help / suggestions.

I can't really discuss medical situation for two reasons. One, the FDA can say that I am attempting to market our supplements as drugs. Even if the FDA doesn't do anything, I can get hit with civil litigation surrounding the FFDCA. We have multiple times, in fact. Two, there are separate regulations surrounding attempting to fulfill the role of a qualified medical physician without a license. These are totally separate from the civil liability from potential harm. This is why I have to be careful about what I say.

I can say that those two mushrooms are very safe, and I have spoken to many people that have given them to their teenagers. Will they help in this instance? It's really hard to say without studies specifically looking into it. Also, cognitive issues from past diseases can be a very complex thing. Sometimes the mechanism leading to those issues are not obvious, and targeting the normal strategies might do nothing. I know it can be annoying having someone suggest seeing a doctor, but perhaps seeing someone that is familiar with the long-term side effects of meningitis would give you a good place to start. It does seem to be a thing, though.

Getting down to the mechanism(s) behind these deficits will be key to figuring out a plan to help improve the issue. This is why I think if you can find a specialist that has dealt with a lot of meningitis patients, they might be able to steer you in the right direction. Perhaps they have seen how some things have improved their patients outcomes, while others have not. There's no replacement for direct experience in cases like these.

I will say, from a completely hypothetical and academic standpoint, that if I had a son in a similar position I would personally have no issues with him trying lion's mane and reishi.
