Ephedrine completely eliminates my anxiety

Original post in this thread

This requires some back story, so please bear with me. Any advice would be much appreciated.

For 2 years, I had a series of health issues from living in a house that had a hidden water leak and therefore covered in mold.
I moved out in October of last year, and my health has returned for the most part.

There is one thing that is still lingering, and that is periodic anxiety and racing thoughts.
I never had any issues with this in the past, and it's very different from the typical experience I have with anxiety where it is connected to a specific event in the past or the future.

Instead, the best way I can describe it is that my brain is actively searching for things in my past to be anxious about.
It could be something from 10 minutes ago or ten years!
It results in multiple flashing memories, and often something close to a panic attack.
This used to happen numerous times a day.

I've tried every anxiolytic compound recommended on this sub with no effect or even paradoxical effects.
I also cut out coffee and stayed away from any stimulants because it made sense that this would help lessen these episodes. Nothing made much of a difference.

This was up until a few weeks a…

Ephedrine is one of my favorite stimulants. It has this effect on me as well. I used to take it every day in the early days of the company, to get me through 12 hour days 7 days a week.

As for the mechanism, it has to be NE related and due to direct effects on the α2A-adrenergic receptor.

In Vitro Characterization of Ephedrine-Related Stereoisomers at Biogenic Amine Transporters and the Receptorome Reveals Selective Actions as Norepinephrine Transporter Substrates

The results are reported visually in Fig. 1. Most agents showed significant activity at NE transporter binding and little activity at DA and 5-HT trans-porter binding (Tables 1 and 2). Interestingly, these agents had little activity at adrenergic receptors when screened at 10 microM final concentration, and only three agents demonstrated enough activity in the screen to warrant Ki determinations. (-)-Norephedrine had a Ki value of 5,000±700 nM at rat β1-adrenergic receptors and was inactive at rat α2-adrenergic receptors. (-)-Pseudoephedrine and (-)-methcathinone had a Ki values of 5,330±510 and 2,930±170nM, respectively, at the human α1A receptor. All agents were inactive at cholinergic, nicotinic, GABA, histaminergic, prostaglandin, opioid, N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors, dopamine, and most 5-HT receptors. Significant activity was ob-served at α2-adrenergic receptors and the 5-HT7 serotonin receptor, although the Ki values were typically in the low micromolar range (Table 2). Because phenylpropanolamines are thought to have direct agonist activity at α1-adrenergic receptors, all agents were tested for functional activity at the human α1A and α2A receptors. All agents were inactive (Table3). To our knowledge, this represents the first reported comprehensive pharmacological screen of these commonly used drugs.

It could also be the 5-HT7 receptor. That receptor can actually control the release of cAMP, or cyclic adenosine monophosphate. cAMP has some interesting mood effects.
