I assume that gut pDCs are activated first which then modulate circulatory pDCs?

Yes, those are generally the ones targeted. This is how EpiCor kind of works, too. It strengthens your immune system in your gut and other mucous membranes, which act as a first line of defense from pathogens. It's also how normal probiotics work. They out-compete the bad bacteria and provide a barrier there.
