How widespread are fake supplements?

Original post in this thread

So, a question I haven't seen asked here and one I'm curious in. How many supplements are fake on the market? How many supplements get stored improperly? Is there any kind of U.S or European regulation that tests the supplements for their claims?

I've just recently had Ashwagandha that did good from one brand and Ashwagandha that sucked from another and I want to understand why. One was an extract in a pill and the other was just root powder itself. The extract claimed 5% Withanolides, while the root power didn't claim anything. So could it be that one of my Ashwanadha's just freaking sucked and probably was a scam?

And this doesn't only apply to Ashwagandha, it happens many times, I'd estimate half my supplements to be useless. I usually pay for the cheapest supps, but I live in Europe and thought maybe it'd be regulated?

Also any European brands recommended here? I usually just buy generic brands...

As an example here's a Washington Post article claiming 80% of herbal supplements don't contain the herbs? [https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/02/03/gnc-target-wal-mart-walgreens-accused-of-selling-fake-herbals/](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mi…

Yea I tried your yeast extract, coz epicor was more expensive, does epicor have fewer beta-glucans?, therefore less chance of bloating??

Epicor "supposedly" has a patented fermentation process that changes it. However, Embria keeps all the details of that secret. So there is no way for us to verify that. If anything, I've had more people say they got stomach upset on Epicor. So yeast based prebiotics might not be for you. Do probiotics do it to you as well?
