Absorption of calcium and magnesium taken simultaneously?

Original post in this thread

I know that calcium and magnesium compete for absorption and that it's best to spread them out.

However, it's still super convenient to put a bunch of magnesium in my dairy-based smoothie. So I consume magnesium and calcium together in every sip. The amount of magnesium in my smoothies is roughly equal to the amount of calcium.

Is it reasonable to assume that I absorb approx half of the magnesium that I would if I took without calcium?

Are you sure about Magnesium L-threonate? Threonic acid is not an amino acid. Magnesium l-threonate is thus a magnesium salt that will dissociate in the stomach into its ion (Mg) and anion (Threonic acid). Correct me if I'm wrong.

u/MisterYouAreSoDumb

Sure, it is not technically an amino acid. It's a sugar acid. However, I believe they are still coordinate bonds, not ionic bonds.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12961869

Further analyses indicate that M2+ in the compounds coordinated to oxygen atom of the carboxy group, while the proton of the carboxyl group was dissociated and the proton belonging to hydroxyl was not M2+ coordinated to L-threonic acid through the sp3 hybrizated fashion. It was assumed that the coordination number of M2+ was 4.

The magnesium is bound to the oxygen atoms in the threonic acid with coordinate bonds. So while it is not strictly an amino acid, it is more of a chelate than a salt because we are dealing with coordinate bonds instead of ionic bonds. This means they do not dissociate in solution like a regular salt would.

Magnesium is not going to reduce your tolerance. You'll need something stronger like memantine for that. Even then, it takes a combination of memantine and time off. Some people have had good results with DXM too. Magn
