Fuck me and fuck everything, let me tell all of you how my life went to hell in a hand basket. I liked smoking pot, get pulled over for smoking pot, get probation and treatment court (super hyper intense court mandated therapy that takes up the majority of my fucking day). Get kicked out of school because my college had a "zero tolerance" policy, my fucking probation officer took it upon herself to go out of her way to let my school know even though it just made my life worse. Get drug tested 2x a week, go to group therapy 3x a week. My anxiety comes back because I can't smoke weed, getting kicked out of school makes it worse, get medicated with anti-depressents. Meet sketchy girl in my "treatment" she introduces me to oxy because it "leaves your system by your next drug test." Officer who pulled me over indicted on corruption charges, all cases he was involved in are thrown out (as are mine). Start using oxy more recreationally because my life is shit. Become hooked, can't afford it anymore. Now I've been hooked on heroin on and off for years, fucking years. I can't hold a job down, I've wasted thousands trying to go back to school and then skipping out to rather shoot up. Fuck m…

Those are pretty lame methods to 'cure' anxiety, other than exercise and meditation. People with panic disorder are usually afraid of having panic attacks, so acknowledgement doesn't always help. Often people can't just stop catastrophizing and enjoy themselves.
Weed also isn't really a legitimate cure for anxiety as it is impairing and doesn't even compare to pharmaceuticals.
I know you're just trying to help, but suggesting someone not get medicated when you have NO clue as to the severity of the disorder is a bit irresponsible. Some people really need medication to get their shit together.

I like to think I am a very reasonable and level headed person. I almost never let my emotions adversely affect my situation. However, if a panic attack hits, there is nothing I can do to stop it. But after taking a Xanax I can stop the noise in my head and get back in control. I only ever need it once in a while. Maybe a couple times a year. However, when a real panic attack hits, benzos are necessary.
Now apart from panic attacks, there are ways to reduce the likelihood that they will happen. Ever since starting adaptogens, I almost never have any anxiety. Bacopa, rhodiola, and ashwagandha make a huge difference on a day to day basis. They do not build up a tolerance, and actually get more effective over time. I would definitely suggest them to anyone needing a little help leveling out anxiety.
