Procholinergic and memory enhancing properties of the selective norepinephrine uptake inhibitor atomoxetine.

What they were answering

[deleted] · 2 points

Piracetam and the other racetams have HACU-enhancing properties, don't they? And sulbutiamine too, if I'm not mistaken. I wonder if their purported stimulating properties has less to do with being a paychostimulat and more to do with alleviating depressive symptoms.

I think it'd be really cool if one day there was a machine that could measure different receptors in the brain, their sensitivities, any abnormalities compared to healthy subjects...I know it's likely a long ways off, but it would probably aid in developing better psychiatric drugs, because we could see the changes happening in real time. Maybe I'm off in fantasyland (pretty sleepy actually), but it makes sense in my head!! It'd make the whole process of experimentation (on rats...of course!) a lot easier because the rats wouldn't have to be killed, tissue analysis wouldn't be so complex..this shivers me timbers.

No, they do not. They increase the transmission and usage of ACh. However, coluracetam is unique in its ability to enhance uptake of choline into neurons. The stimulating properties are more to do with enhanced glutamate signaling.

I don't want to say there will never be a machine that can do that. However, I do not think I will see it in my lifetime. The mechanisms are too complex to accurately view in real time in a living subject.
