Talking to a doctor about a modafinil prescription

I've recently gotten into nootropics after having terrible experiences with SSRI's. 5-HTP has helped me more than any anti-depressant ever did.
My only problem is that I suffer from terrible insomnia. I go for 2-4 days without sleeping. I've tried melatonin and that hasn't worked for me even at extremely high doses of 40mg. I'm seeing my doctor soon to see what he recommends to help improve sleep(he will probably prescribe me a small dose of ambien).
Well with this I wanted to ask my doctor about modafinil and see if he thinks it would help with my daily life seeing that I'm basically tired 24/7.
tl;dr If I ask my doctor about modafinil do you think he would prescribe it? I'm not certain doctors actually regularly prescribe modafinil so that's why I'm asking.

Classes begin soon so a schedule will come back into play some way.
I don't need to become dependent on anything right now I'm recovering from an addiction and I don't need anything else like that in my life to begin with. Just going to see what my doctor recommends next time I see him. Thanks a lot for the advice though, already looking into where to buy Bacopa.

I'd suggest rhodiola as well. Take that when you wake up, and it promotes wakefulness very well. I take it to help with my daytime sleepiness. Also, it helps balance out the bacopa, as I find that it can sometimes make me too calm.
Here is what I would suggest:
Morning:
* 250mg Bacopa
* 500mg Rhodiola (It depends on the % extract you get. You might need less)
* 1,000-5,000iu of Vitamin D
* Sublingual coenzymated B complex
* 15-20 min of light therapy right when you wake up
Night:
* .5mg melatonin 30min before bed
* 250mg bacopa
* 500mg ashwagandha
* 400mg magnesium glycinate
* Use Flux on your computer to lower the light levels of your computer screen according to the sunset.
