Talking to a doctor about a modafinil prescription

I've recently gotten into nootropics after having terrible experiences with SSRI's. 5-HTP has helped me more than any anti-depressant ever did.
My only problem is that I suffer from terrible insomnia. I go for 2-4 days without sleeping. I've tried melatonin and that hasn't worked for me even at extremely high doses of 40mg. I'm seeing my doctor soon to see what he recommends to help improve sleep(he will probably prescribe me a small dose of ambien).
Well with this I wanted to ask my doctor about modafinil and see if he thinks it would help with my daily life seeing that I'm basically tired 24/7.
tl;dr If I ask my doctor about modafinil do you think he would prescribe it? I'm not certain doctors actually regularly prescribe modafinil so that's why I'm asking.

Wow thank you. What exactly do you mean by light therapy? I do morning workouts for about 15-20 minutes already.
I was going to start using the L-Theanine+Caffeine combo soon so I guess I need to head over to stackadvice. Should I just stop 5-HTP completely? I don't really want to because I love what it is doing for me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_therapy
consists of exposure to daylight or to specific wavelengths of light using polychromatic polarised light, lasers, light-emitting diodes, fluorescent lamps, dichroic lamps or very bright, full-spectrum light, usually controlled with various devices. The light is administered for a prescribed amount of time and, in some cases, at a specific time of day.
It's exposure to specific wavelengths of light to get your body's catecholamine regulation in check, and circadian rhythm in balance. You can just go outside and expose your body and face to the sun if you want to save money. Or you can buy a specific light therapy system at a store, which you would sit in front of every morning.
You can stay on the 5-HTP for now, until you get the bacopa. Then slowly draw down your dosage of it after starting the bacopa. You want to get your enzymes in balance so that your body is naturally producing serotonin, not relying on 5-HTP to produce it. Make sure your diet is high in tryptophan as well.
