Stephen Colbert gave a shout-out to Tea Party group FreedomWorks for stepping up its’ efforts against the Affordable Care Act: “Don’t fall for it, young people. You don’t need insurance. You’re gonna be young and healthy forever.”

I am doing precisely that, the actual time and material cost that we as a ~350 million strong group of people must devote to our healthcare is relatively stable and completely sustainable. Who we decided to let siphon off money by manipulating the price is totally variable. We could literally install a Canadian style system in a decade and completely change the people receiving the benefits. We could pass a law nationalizing all health insurance providers in a month. Or provide a tax payer driven public option and let the market destroy them. None of that will appreciably alter the actual cost of repairing a shoulder.

Okay, then I see what you are saying. If that is the case, then how is it my shoulder surgery would have cost much less 10 years ago, even when accounting for inflation? If our system of healthcare delivery has no bearing on the cost, why do all statistical trends show it exponentially increasing since the 1980's?
