I get a very different effect from Mg-Threonate than Glycinate or Citrate. The papers I skimmed suggested that gut absorption was about the same but that BBB transport is much higher for Mg-Threonate.

Yes, that is what the studies suggest. However, I have not felt a difference. However, I have an inflammation disorder. Certain inflammatory mediators like leukotrienes have been shown to increase the permeability of the BBB. Perhaps my BBB is more permeable, and simply getting it to my blood stream is the biggest hurdle. Or perhaps I have been supplementing with glycinate for so long, that my brain magnesium levels are already high. This would mean the extra permeability of threonate might not be as noticeable.
