MDMA 'eases post-traumatic stress':

What they were answering

[deleted] · 2 points

since you're a biochemist, can you answer me this? I heard 5-htp taken in pill form is bogus because the substance never breaks the blood brain barrier, and it actually has negative effects on your heart (pill form 5htp, that is). any truth to this you think?

u/MisterYouAreSoDumb

No, that is incorrect. 5-HTP readily passes the blood brain barrier. However, it also readily converts to serotonin in your periphery by the enzyme aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase. This is bad because serotonin, or 5-HT, cannot pass the blood brain barrier. This means that you are wasting your 5-HTP. Also, elevated serotonin levels in your periphery can cause heart valve damage. This is why everyone should ALWAYS take EGCG with their 5-HTP. EGCG is an aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase inhibitor. This will prevent it's metabolism to 5-HT until it has a chance to pass your blood brain barrier.
