Any reports from the ND team on the Black Maca in comparison to original Maca extract?

u/MisterYouAreSoDumb · ND Owner

So my history with maca is long and complex. It all began before I started this company, actually.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Nootropics/comments/1apxrj/raw_maca_root_warning/

That experience really fucked my GI tract up. I literally passed out from the pain, and my GI tract was not back to normal for at least 6 months. I think part of it was that it gave me SIBO, and another part is that I developed an allergy to it. This sucked, because I really liked the effects of maca. It was something that I responded well to, outside of the GI issues. However, every time I took it again, even when gelatinized, my stomach started hurting. Anyone that has had horrible stomach pain for long periods knows it's not worth it. Even though I liked the effects, I couldn't live with the stomach issues. However, I always wanted to figure out if I could develop a maca that I could actually take. The result of all that work was our 5% extract. I developed that specifically for me, and I take it every day now. I love it. It was very much focused on the macamide side of things, though. Those more hit FAAH and the endocannabinoid system. I really like those effects, and so does our product specialist Emiel. However, after we released it, we noticed that consumer responses to it were split. The people that like it really liked it, like Emiel and I. Then there was another group of people that didn't like it, or didn't really notice much from it. The reason for that is that some people don't respond to FAAH inhibitors, and may not notice the endocannabinoid effects. Since our 5% extract was focused on that, they were not getting the effects they were expecting with maca.

So what were the effects they were expecting? Well many people enjoy the more stimulating aspects that maca can deliver. The compounds in maca that cause that are the glucosinolates. Those compounds do not come over in the extraction process for our 5% product, so people do not get those effects they expected from it. This meant we had to develop a product that could deliver those compounds as well. This set us down a path of finding a partner we could trust in Peru, which is actually a lot harder than it sounds. Part of it is just that Peru isn't as developed on the scientific front, but also we have higher standards than most. It took us a while to find a partner we could trust, and then do a bunch of testing. This led us to the gelatinized black maca that we used in the formula. It has to be processed properly, so you gelatinize the insoluble fibers that can cause GI issues, but don't destroy the actives in the process. Now unfortunately, enzymes are always rapidly broken down by heat. It's just unavoidable, so the natural myrosinase enzymes present in raw maca are destroyed in the gelatinization process. This means that the glucosinolates present in the maca will not convert to their active isothiocyanate forms in gelatinized maca. This is one of the reasons why many people prefer raw maca. However, the GI risks outweigh that. So what's the solution? Well as part of our project for an optimized sulforaphane product, we did a LOT of testing on myrosinase and its sources. As part of that testing, we were able to source a horseradish powder that had a ton of myrosinase activity. This horseradish is also being used in that upcoming sulforaphane product as well. So adding in the horseradish puts that myrosinase enzyme back in, allowing the natural glucosinolates in maca to convert to their active isothiocyanate forms. This will then give people that natural energy they were missing from our 5% extract. Or course we put the 5% in there as well, to get the FAAH inhibition that many people like. However, this blend is going to be much more like a traditional maca in effects that some of those people were expecting.

Now this has kind of been an issue for me. Pretty much everything we do revolves around products that I want to make for myself or my family... or at the very least ones that I beta test and get a lot of experience with. In this scenario, I really can't. I still have my allergy to something in maca, so I have to be very careful taking it. I took this product once or twice, but the stomach pain started coming back, so I stopped. I've had to rely heavily on Emiel's experience with this one, and the beta testing of other people at our facility. So this is one of the rare products of ours that I will not personally be taking, due to my own GI issues. However, I always recognize that everyone is different, and what many people want isn't necessarily what is best for me personally. Emiel is also off today taking his father to a concert, so he can't be here to explain it, but he really likes this blend. He does not have the GI issues that I have with maca, and really enjoys the more complex effect profile this blend gives. So for anyone that has tried our 5% maca, and just didn't get the stimulating effects they were hoping for, this blend is going to deliver that.
