Is Berberine safe to use?

So I found this journal made back in 2014 specifying that Berberine may cause double strand DNA breaks in some circumstances and has a pro-oxidative effect in cancer cell lines. I know that this may not necessarily translate to in-vivo human use of the supplement, but is this something that is considered at all when taking it, would have a similar oxidative or DNA damaging effect on healthy cells as well?
If so, how do we go about reducing potential DNA risks to users of Berberine. Any stack recommendations or compounds to better protect DNA while getting the benefit of Berberine?

Not trying to raise the alarm, just want to figure out if this is cause for concern or something that should be touched more upon.

correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't there a study showing that berberine had a detrimental effect on gut microbiota? I'll see if I can find.

Berberine positively affects the microbiome.
