The science on kratom is evolving rapidly. It was only a couple years ago they discovered speciofoline might play a role in why some kratom samples/batches have different effects than others:

I suspect that it's dopaminergic or noradrenergic based on varied effects (some kratom is more stimulating), but there's no hard data on that. That paper only determined that it wasn't an opioid, but beyond that we don't know.

I mean, ol' Beckett here patented this in 1963! The Vietnam war was going on, and this dude was already patenting speciofoline extracted from kratom!
