Salidrosol Solution vs. Crenulata Powder: Is there a functional difference between the two?

Original post in this thread

ActualThrowaway7856 · 11 points

They both contain only Tyrosol and Salidroside with no rosavins. Is there something about the plant form that the solution form doesn't have or vice versa?

If it's just about the concentration of tyrosol and salidroside, would taking an amount of Crenulata powder equivalent to one serving of Salidrosol solution yield the same effects as the solution?

Plant extracts always have more in them than just the main standardized actives. Crenulata is a pretty cool one that gets overshadowed by the rosea species. I think sometimes it gets a bad name because at lot of dishonest people use crenulata as an adulterant in rosea, or just call it rosea incorrectly. However, Rhodiola crenulata has some interesting effects that are unique to it.

You can see salidroside and tyrosol are big parts of its efficacy. They are the main active ingredients, but not the ONLY active ingredients. There are other things in there that are beneficial.

The root of the medicinal plant R. crenulata contains more than 21 compounds. Besides salidroside, p-tyrosol is another important active constituent of the plant [31], [32]. Tyrosol has been relatively well studied as the main ingredient of some other dietary food such as white wine and olive oil [58]–[61], and a variety of cellular activities of tyrosol including antioxidant activity [59], [62], neural protective functions [61] and anti-inflammatory effects [60] have been reported. Hence tyrosol might also exert its neuroprotective effects through its antioxidant activity, just like salidroside. If tyrosol is also found to exhibit neuroprotective activities on NSCs, then the combined activities of salidroside and tyrosol may attribute to the protective actions of the RCE.

Flavonol glycosides from Rhodiola crenulata

In addition to three known flavonol glycosides, kaempferol 7-O-~-L-rhamnopyranoside, rhodionin and rhodiosin, a new kaempferol glycoside was isolated from the roots of Rhodiola crenulata. The structure was identified as kaempferol 7-glucosyl(1 ~ 3)rhamnoside by means of spectral analysis

So not only does Rhodiola crenulata contain other known flavonol glycosides, it also contains novel ones not found in other Rhodiola species.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1414365/

Six chemical components I-IV were isolated from the roots of Rhodiola crenulata (Crassulaceae). Five (I-V) of them were identified as known salidroside (I), p-tyrosol(II), pyrogallol, gallic acid, and beta-sitosterol, based on comparison of its Rf(TLC), mmp and spectral data with those of authentic samples. The sixth component was found to be a new delta 1-isopentenyl-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside and named crenulatin(VI). Its structure was confirmed on the basis of its spectral data (IR, MS, 1H- and 13C-NMR).

So while salidroside and tyrosol are the main actives in all Rhodiola species, there are other ones in there that have effects as well. Sometimes you get an entourage effect with other things in botanicals as well. So you can't really give like-for-like comparisons, as they are different things. When we set standardizations, we are not saying those are the only things in the extract that we care about. We just have to set certain compounds as our marker compounds, then create a standardization around those. It's similar to tongkat ali. We don't only care about eurycomanone. There are a bunch of other things in tongkat that we want. Eurycomanone is just a very good marker compound to base a standardization around. If you took pure eurycomanone, it would feel totally different than an extract standardized to the same amount of eurycomanone. The same goes for rhodiola. Salidrosol will feel different than the equivalent of Rhodiola crenulata extract.
