Paul Stamets on the complexity of assessing Cordyceps supplements. Seems like one should avoid ND’s cordyceps supplements until they stop using fruiting bodies in favor of mycelium. Discuss

Have there been studies directly comparing the chemical composition of extracts of the mycelium and fruiting bodies, and comparing the in vivo effects of these extracts?

Chemical composition studies, yes. No in vivo human studies of lion's mane mycelium, though. Also, no animal studies that compare fruiting body to mycelium in the same study. Also, no studies on mycelium on grain. This is the big issue. There is ZERO human research for Host Defense's product.
Again, mycelium is cool, and we are working on one. However, mycelium on grain is NOT cool. You can culture pure mycelium without the rice, it just costs more. Growing mycelium on rice, then grinding it all up with the rice, is just dumb. It would be like us grinding up all the soil with our panax ginseng roots, and calling it ginseng. It would be mostly soil by weight.... I bought some Host Defense lion's mane recently, as we are running it through our lab. I tasted it, and it's all fucking rice! It tastes just like unflavored Rice Crispies. Doesn't taste like lion's mane at all. It's nuts!
