montelukast (Singulair) as a nootropic?

Hello,

I recently was prescribed montelukast as an attempt to address anosmia (loss of smell) which hasn't been alleviated by many treatments (capsaicin, countless intranasal steroids, etc.) and other sinus issues (congestion, etc.) likely related to a dust mite allergy exacerbated by the fact that our dryer is currently venting inside the house (hopefully fixed soon).

Due to the anti-inflammatory properties inherent in all leukotriene antagonists (such as montelukast), I was curious about its potential effects on neuroinflammation and whether it may act as a nootropic.

I ran across a study—though it is a rat study so I'm a bit skeptical—showing that montelukast exhibited antineuroinflammatory properies, along with all of the benefits such an action would be expected to confer. From the abstract:

Here we show that a 6-week treatment of young (4 months) and old (20 months) rats with montelukast, a marketed anti-asthmatic drug antagonizing leukotriene receptors, reduces neuroinflammation, elevates hippocampal neurogenesis and improves learning and memory in old animals.

Before rushing to experiment with this agent, know that montelu…

Exercise will definitely make you hungry. It's most useful as an appetite suppressant when fasting before exercise, it really helps stretch out those fasting hours. Fasted cardio/exercise is the best for burning off fat, and the longer the fast the better.

That's good to know. I fast till lunch every day as it is. Some days I fast till dinner. I am so used to it now, I sometimes forget to eat before I go mountain biking. That becomes an issue, though, as I burn so much energy doing it.
