Unfortunately, I have some bad news. Jason (/u/Guacamolium), my business partner and co-founder of Ceretropic has died. He was found dead in his apartment on Friday afternoon. He had not come in for a few days, and was not answering his phone. I got a little worried, so /u/Synzael and I decided to go check on him. After he did not answer, we decided to get the police to come down. When they entered his apartment, they found him dead inside.
The toxicology screen will not be back for a few weeks. However, Jason had been having a few problems with Xanax and drinking. He was never one to be careful with his own safety, and would often have horrible insomnia. This led to him turning to Xanax and alcohol to try and get a little bit of sleep some nights. I let him know how irresponsible that was, but he never really got the message. There were a few occasions that I found him passed out after taking too much. I made him get into a substance abuse program, which he had been going to regularly. However, I never felt he was taking it seriously enough. I had hoped that he had things under control, but always feared that something would happen. I just figured it would be him getting in trou…

I strongly suspect that the toxicology will show more than just Xanax and alcohol. I mean no disrespect to Jason, but it would be extremely hard to die from Xanax overdose unless the BAC was near toxic levels. I suspect that tox will will show opiates, too. I've never heard of a Xanax OD death, even with alcohol. Opiates combined with benzos are toxically synergistic. (Think Heath Ledger). Those who use or abuse benzos (even with alcohol) do not need to worry too much.
Very sad and a cautionary lesson for us nonetheless.

Jason hated opiates. There is no way he was on them. I knew this guy better than pretty much anyone. I saw him every day, and spoke to him about everything. He lived in my guest bedroom up until very recently, when he moved into an apartment across the street from my neighborhood. The last thing he said to me when we finished orders on Monday was: "I need to try and get some sleep tonight." I have seen him take Xanax and alcohol multiple times to try and sleep, while he was living in my house. I know that is what he turned to. If it is something else, then I will be extremely surprised.
