PHARMACEUTICALS
Drug development has gotten slower and more expensive.
We’d like to fund companies doing this in new ways. We take a broad view of this–we’re interested in things that may not become prescription drugs but still really help people. Areas like nootropics seem under explored.

Maybe Ceretropic wants to apply to YC? :-)
To be serious, they are probably looking for companies that are more into drug development then selling chemicals to people on the internet, but its still a very interesting tidbit. Although, "disrupting" pharmacies anyone?

My understanding is that YCombinator is an "accelerator" or "incubator," not a VC firm. Their approach to the startups the work with is mostly to facilitate, not dictate what the founders should do. I recently listened to a podcast interview with YC's president, Sam Altman, who described their strategy in more detail: http://www.econtalk.org/archives/2014/07/sam_altman_on_s.html
In any case, being accepted by YC has become an important and prestigious "signal" that can open doors to more funding.

Where there is money, there are demands. It's the quintessential part of business. I'll take a look at it, though.
