Are circa 1mg doses of melatonin too wimpy to protect/enhance brain mitochondria?

My understanding is that Tryptophan is a precursor to Melatonin and a better strategy. I'm sorrry but I can't post links right now.
Maybe someone else will address this.

There are too many rate-limiting enzymes in between tryptophan and melatonin for that kind of supplementation to help in the manner in which we are speaking. We want the ROS scavenging abilities of melatonin.
In my opinion, the best way to achieve this is with the new tacrine–melatonin hybrids, or the 5-Methoxy-2-(N-acetylaminoethyl)indole analog. The former being a hybrid that has cholinergic, antioxidant, and neuroprotective effects. The latter being a melatonin analog with a higher antioxidant and cytoprotective activity.
