Can you develop tolerance to antihistamines ?

So, the allergy season has once again struck upon me and was wondering if it is preferable to switch between various antihistamines to have them fully effective. My favorite one has always been fexofenadine, but I found it loose its effectiveness over longer period of use. Last year, I alternated between fexo and diphenhydramine, but the adverse effects of DPH weren't that welcome.
So do you guys know if there's such a thing as tolerance to antihistamines of was it just in my head ?

Does the 24 hour drug holiday allow you to slightly decrease your dose for a bit? I'd be tempted to pull off a 24 hour stoppage once a fortnight for a few months till I was back at one a day. At least you'll spend less on the damn things. :P
Sucks to hear it's so severe though, at least now if I again get so itchy I can't sleep at all, I can just think "well, I should shut the fuck up, I don't have it as bad as /u/MisterYouAreSoDumb."
I can't help but wonder if you'll have to keep increasing the dosage for the rest of your life, and you'll be taking a pack a day later on. I have no idea how zyrtec is metabolized, but that might have run on kidney or liver effects of it's own. :s

I don't take time off. That 24 hour period was a mistake when out camping. I never purposely take time off. I have to take 3-4 a day now. It's unfortunate.
My doctors assure me that cetirizine does not harm the liver or kidneys, and I can keep upping the dose if necessary. I hope it levels off or just stops one day. That or we make some advancements into figuring it out.
