Can you develop tolerance to antihistamines ?

Original post in this thread

So, the allergy season has once again struck upon me and was wondering if it is preferable to switch between various antihistamines to have them fully effective. My favorite one has always been fexofenadine, but I found it loose its effectiveness over longer period of use. Last year, I alternated between fexo and diphenhydramine, but the adverse effects of DPH weren't that welcome.

So do you guys know if there's such a thing as tolerance to antihistamines of was it just in my head ?

Well, me too. I don't mind it, I find it kinda fun to play with when I'm bored at work.. there's even an artist that draws on themselves, it looks quite cool (I even got my gf to draw on my back just for shit and giggles).

I still have a nice big bottle of DPH sitting around, just like OP, in case it gets a bit too much. Usually I like to spite myself if I find myself becoming dependent on them, and quit using them for a few days. Just as tolerance is gained quickly, it appears to be lost quickly too.

Lastly, as a small aside - and since we're in drugnerds - have you ever tried dextromethorphan? Recreational use can cause histaminic reactions and sensitize your mast cells, I have a suspicion this is what caused my dermatographia.. it started around the same time as my use of it.

Mine cannot be left to its own accord. If I don't take Zyrtec, I will want to kill myself. Then my airway will close, and I won't have to. It's bad! The longest I've gone without antihistamines in the last 15 years, is about 24 hours. Any longer and I cannot stand it.

I have taken DXM. I took some earlier today in fact. It does not affect my issues. The only thing that really affects it is cold. Other than that, it does what it wants. I eat different foods and travel to hundreds of cities all over the world, yet nothing changes it. It's just as bad in Budapest as it is in Arizona. There is nothing environmental about mine.

Mine started randomly one day freshman year of high school. There was nothing that could have set it off, and certainly nothing that has stayed constant since then. Yet my symptoms remain the same, if not worse.

One interesting thing is that MDMA stops the symptoms. If I am having an attack and I take a dose of MDMA, everything goes away. It's an interesting effect.
