Discussion: nootropics/supplements that aid the prevention or reverse the neurotoxic/cardiotoxic effects of Adderall

Original post in this thread

Just wanted to pool everyone's ideas into one thread. I got the idea from my last post when /u/waqwarrior posted about being able to reduce some of the negative effects of adderall. Can anyone else add to this short list or include sources for the ones already here? Also I realize that this list isn't for everyone but for those that do take it I think it would be helpful. Secondly, I am interested in reversal of negative effects because I am quitting tonight and would like to know my options. Thanks!

From his post:
>It is a fact that amphetamine is a powerful stimulant, though. This will increase the firing of glutamatergic receptors. Glutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter. An overabundance of glutamate firing can lead to cell death, which is the last thing you want. L-Theanine mildly blocks NMDA and kainate receptors, which give it mildly neuroprotective effects - it's preventing (or at the least lessening) the negative effects of overexcitation. It also boosts GABA production; GABA is inhibitory, essentially glutamate's opposite (though it functions much differently, this comparison works for a simple explanation).
The type of stress your cells are under is often referred…

So you are saying that L-theanine hinders ability to store memories, adapt and learn? I would be interested in a source for this, especially since it is against the contrary opinion of r/nootropics. Correct me if I am wrong here, I don't know too much about this stuff yet.

Total blockage of NMDA receptors are going to hinder cognition. So taking ketamine or PCP is going to make learning harder. However, memantine binds to a receptor site within the NMDA channel itself. This means it's modulation is predicated on the neuron reaching excitability, and the magnesium blockage clearing. This means that memantine's mechanism of action is a much more intelligent way of modulating the NMDA receptors.

L-theanine's mechanism at the NMDA receptors is subtle. It should not affect cognition negatively, especially when paired with positive allosteric modulators like racetams.

That's incorrect. It had nothing to do with labeling at all. We did not label these compounds as supplements, didn't make disease claims, and didn't make structure function claims. We called them nootropic compounds, and
