In Australia if a tourist has a fine while they are in the country their passport is flagged and if they try to leave the are held at the international terminal until it is paid, or if they cant pay it sent to gaol and you have a bit of the fine deducted for each day you serve

Is that true? I got a ticket in Sydney once, and they let me leave with no issues. Then they mailed it to my house and said my passport would be flagged and I would not be let back in until I paid it. But I have been back twice since then with no issues. I think they just say it to scare you. I don't think anyone is actually checking anything.
